The EMMA project for the "DEVELOPMENT OF LIGHT AND LOW-COST MULTIMEDIA STRUCTURES FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY" is supported by the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN) and by The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) within the OT1 "Promoting technological development , Innovation and quality research " with a budget of 497.076,70€.

EMMA is an integrated project of strategic nature for the automotive industry, in which innovative technologies for the fabrication of multi - material structures will be developed. The main objective is to develop metal - polymer composite hybrid structures (PMH) to be integrated in a singular piece for the replacement of structural components made from traditional materials. Because of this, it will be possible to complete at a competitive cost. A 30-40% weight reduction keeps its mechanical performance through localized reinforcement by using conveniently designed composite inserts from the regions subjected to higher mechanical stress.

To achieve these objectives, the project depends on GA-PGA, a project coordinator and leader in the manufacture of automotive components, CASTRO COMPOSITES, a company specialized in composite materials, PLASCIES, with extensive experience in thermoplastic materials and its manufacturing processes, UNTHA , specializing in solutions for recycling and finally, DEMSU with a great knowledge in the design of taylor-made molds and tools. EMMA also counts on the participation of the AIMEN Technological Center, with great experience in the proposed lines of research and where its main contribution is focused on the optimization of the metal-composite joint. For this purpose AIMEN will investigate different technologies of union and different strategies to maximize the resistance and guarantee the benefits of the components.
