Coloured Carbon Hypetex® Spa Spread Tow is a visually stunning 100gsm coloured carbon fibre mechanically characterised to aid structural optimisation, which offer the additional benefits of reduced part finishing time, costs and the extra weight of paint systems.
The flatness of spread tow means filaments are straighter than those bundled in normal fibres. This results in more efficient load-carrying capability, by weight, and improved surface finish, as well as an aesthetic appeal. Spread tow is the starting point for an iconic “woven look” seen increasingly in sporting goods, small airplanes and motorsports applications. Main Features of spread tow fabrics:
- Attractive aesthetic finish: ideal for the production of both parts and tooling.
- Improved mechanical performance as a reduced thickness compared to standard 2D fabrics using 1K fibres.
- High resistance to crack propagation for improved damage tolerance.
- Spread tow also has proven useful in the design of laminates that withstand significantly greater stress.
- Much less crimp: better impact resistance.
- Increased fibre volume fraction compared to 2D weaving. Weight savings.
Hypetex® colouring technologies are optimised for either thermoset or thermoplastic matrix systems. The use of water based resins and nano pigments puts colour onto the composite at the point of production, removing the need for expensive paints or coatings. The result is a colourful premium aesthetic part straight from the mould, and offering a more environmentally friendly colouring solution.
Hypetex is primarily being used as a visual ply, the improved stability enables the user/laminator to have less concern over the alignment of the materials and the final desired visual from the part that is being produced. There may be conditions when this isn't a benefit.
